Most bunks are intended for children and this calls for a sturdy, comfortable bunk bed mattress. Let’s face it, kids won’t think: ”Gosh, I better avoid turning and tossing or sleeping on the edge of the mattress or I’ll need a new one soon”. They jump around in their bed, play with a friend, do whatever crosses their minds.

Here are two mattresses that seem to gather positive reviews but one fits the budget friendly category while the other is somewhat expensive: Serta from CSN Stores and a no name one from Walmart.

1. Serta Canberra mattress

Size:
It’s available both in twin and full. If you buy 2 mattresses, both for the lower and upper bunk, you will save some pennies along the way because you will get a huge discount.

Price:
At this moment the price for a twin is $289.00 and goes up depending on the packages you want to buy: set of 2 twins, a twin and a full or a full.

Core: innerspring

Features:
* 1/4” layer of their patented Serta Comfort Foam
* Vericoil Premiere Innerspirng technology that basically embraces your body resulting in great spinal support and pressure relief
* No roll-off edge thanks to the foam encasement system. If you like to sleep on a side on the edge of the mattress this helps the mattress to support your body weight.
* Safe in case of a fire: the FireBlocker system acts as a shield against flames.

Dimensions: 6.5″ H x 38″ W x 75″ D

Weight: 11 pounds

My take on it:

A great mattress with a design to match. The price tag is also kaboom!

It’s very comfortable and can support the weight of two small children and provide a good night of sleep. The no roll-off edge system makes the mattress more durable and less prone to premature sagging.

It’s lightweight so you can take it off and vacuum it without worrying that it will break your back when you put it back on.

2. 6″ Twin Quilted Top Bunk Bed Mattress, Navy

Size:
This bunk bed mattress is available only in twin.

Price:
If you are a budget shopper, this will make your day, the price tag is unbelievable, only $69.00.

Core:
The mattress is filled with more than 50% recycled material, from which 50% is cotton and 50% polyester. Some refer to it as a foam mattress but it’s not.

Features:
* The mattress can be rolled away thanks to its filling
* Great both for the lower and upper bunk
* Quilted cotton cover which prevent unnecessary sweating throughout the night

Dimensions: 6″ H x 39″ W x 75″ D

Weight: 24 pounds

My take on it:

if you aren’t quite sure what mattress to buy or your budget can’t handle a $200.00 mattress, this is definitely worth a try. The overload of customer reviews is a nice reading material and can help you to decide if you go for it or not.

The main problem of this bunk bed mattress is the fact that it absolutely has to be placed on support boar. Otherwise when your kid will lay on it he will feel the support slats.

Some reviews pointed the fact that the use of a mattress topper over this mattress seems to solve the problem. The only thing you should be careful about is the height: if you plan to use the mattress for the upper bunk the height of the topper shouldn’t exceed 2 inches.

Because the mattress can be rolled away it can be used in dorm rooms or for camping as well.

Compared to the Serta Canberra mattress this is somewhat heavier and when you change the sheets in the top bunk or if you have to flip the mattress you will have a harder task. Still, it’s lighter than most bunk bed mattresses!
