I do deep breathing to help me sleep. What you do is breath along with the Hail Mary prayer, or a poem or something that you know like the back of your hand, and breath as slowly and reguarly as possible. Slowly breath in as you say, “Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee” then hold your breath for “blessed art thou amount women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” then slowly breathe out for, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death” You can continually do this as long as you like; I normally deep breathe until I fall asleep. Oh, and I wanted to put in a tip that might help some people concentrate on one thing (It has helped me along for some time though it doesn’t always work)
Tip: Make stories in your head. It can be pretty much anything. [I usually make stories about myself getting into adventures with fantasy creatures and that kind of stuff but a friend of mine goes for action/cop stories with his favorite actress] ^-^

  13. Kylie

Kind of like what Kathy said, when I can’t fall asleep I imagine myself on a little boat in the middle of the gorgeous turquoise ocean, slightly rocking back and forth with the waves. Another one (this one’s pretty weird) I try is I picture myself on a giant rocking chair. Like I mean giant, like where you would usually sit, I imagine being small enough to lay there. And I pretend I’m rocking back and forth on it. Both of these normally just calm down my body and I get super relaxed and sleepy.

  14. June

I always like to meditate. That makes me very sleepy.

    1. Jayde

I will try all of these! This article was very well put together I’ll tell you that haha! I’ve had trouble sleeping 14 years of my life but what really kept meawake was being afraid of a movie :O

  15. Krista

When I try one of the tips,I fall asleep really fast and I feel better every morning when I wake up.Thanks alot!

  16. Jake

I find that imagining myself sinking into my mattress helps. I start with my feet, and work my way slowly up my body relaxing my muscles as I go. If you close your eyes, focus on relaxing your muscles and feeling them sink into the mattress (starting with feet and working up), it actually feels as though you’re sinking deeper into your bed. Then telling yourself your eyes are getting heavy as you feel your head sink in… That usually helps me. Just talked my girlfriend though it on the phone (she couldn’t sleep) and she was out in about three minutes.

  17. Wayne Malynyk

Another fast way to fall asleep is, sleep naked. I used to wake up with my underwear bunching up and it was distracting, now I just sleep in the nude and nothing is constricting and it is comfortable.

  18. Erick

same as nate,, i cant fall asleep either, so i decided to check things out, guess i’ll try the warm bath tomorow:D tnx for the tip..!

  19. Ellie

For me I like to daydream, play out a scene in your head perhaps even multiple times. I also like to listen to my surroundings and become absorbed in it. I’m sleepy now so I’m off to sleep!

  20. Lita

Usually for me to go to sleep….I have to have music or t.v. on!

You should try that! I fall asleep after a while.

    1. Ian

      Yeah me too

  21. Brayden

i don’t know if this is just pointing out the obvious but i feel it is nessesary to say, if you want to fall asleep fast…wake up a bit earlier. it’ll be hard the first few days but once you get a good routine it’ll be great

  22. Brittany

Maybe a sleeping mask. I use them.

  23. taylor

thank-you sos much, i l<3 this article, it helped so much, even though i looked you up because i couldnt sleep. Another tip for you, apparantly warm malt/hot chocolate will help someone sleep πŸ™‚

  24. mike smith

Have a fan right up aginst your face so that your body naturally want to close your eyes be careful you may son rely on that fan

  25. Mandi9151999

I think that it might help if you put in there that drinking warm milk or (my personal favorite)warm water with a 1/2 teaspoon of salt. My great X4 gramma did that on her kids. My mom told, me it works, especially after #13

    1. Brandon

ive never heard of that ima tell someone and see if that actually works for them

  26. Maddy

Do not count sheep! if you count sheep, your mind will focus on that, not on relaxing or getting sleep.

    1. Ian

Actually it works on other people too. It really works on my cousin dozens of times.

  27. emily

Wow! these are definitely great. i like how you list a lot of tips, and since everyone is different, that is really good. i also like how they arent crazy or require a lot of sacrifice.thank you so much! πŸ™‚

  28. kaylaaaa

What I do sometimes to help fall asleep, is this: Think of eveything that happened that day. Go through the schdule in your head of every little thing happened. If I had a bad day, then I try to see the good in it and the good that can come out of it. But don’t get angry or upset with something that happened, that’s why it’s important to stay positive. Anyway, thinking of very little activity will soon bore you, (Deja vu!) and hopefully drift off to sleep. If not, maybe thinking about your day can help you. It does to me, and being a senior in high school, it makes it easier to fall asleep with my very busy schedule.

  29. Anonymous

What works best for me, is listening to music. It should be rather calm though. The only problem is, that when I feel like I’m almost asleep I take off my earphones which brings the consciousness back and I can’t fall asleep again. πŸ™

    1. Ian

      Same here

  30. Teiliana

Absolutely nothing works for me even when I AM tired. Only one thing seems to work, and that’s putting headphones in my ear and turning on my iPod. The only reason why I can’t do that now is because with the music playing in my ears, I can’t hear my alarm in the morning to wake up for school. Which sucks really bad because now I just stay up until around 2 in the morning and only get 3 hours of sleep. ( I have to wake up at 5 πŸ™ ]

    1. Emily

You should have a parent wake you up. Or turn up your alarm volume. If you have enough songs on your ipod, program it to go through all your songs. Then pick a loud, blaring scream song that will begin playing around 5. Just count up all the minutes of all your songs and see how long they are.

    2. Jeanette

On some iPods you are able to put an alarm on, so if you set your alarm on that, then you could hear it, and still listen to music. Hope it helps!!

  31. Insomiac

i have tried all of these things and nothing has worked for me i usually sleep 2-3 hours a night if at all. ill lay in my silent room pitch black after a warm bath for hours on end and never be able to fall asleep the only way i can actually fall asleep is to stay up watching tv until i get so tired i can barely walk then drag myself to bed and wait another hour for my sleep to finally come can anyone help me out?(i have been like this for about 5 years)

    1. Megan

      Dear Isomiac,

you should probably consult a doctor who will give you sleep medications. If you want another great thing to do is prayer. Talk to Jesus about this really it would help. I don’t know your religion but I’m sure it will help like it did for me. I go to Him whenever i am in need. Hope this helps.

    2. disneynut

A hot water bottle at my feet and/or put on socks. Socks are not just for when it’s cold outside. Of course I’m awake now…and I’m drinking Chamomile tea and reading this article. LOL!

    3. Ross

Maybe you have a sleep disorder?

  32. Taylor

Just reading all of the tips made me tired. I know also that if you can have someone give you a massage to relax your muscles you will be more tempted to just fall asleep.

  37. bridget

i have a tip,my mom used to tell me to just relax, think of your favourite colour, and inhale and exhale.works like a charm!

  38. Molly

    Hi!

Thanks for putting this together. Many people don’t realize the importance of sleep. I’m a student and researcher of sleep-related disorders at Stanford University in Stanford, CA and wanted to address one major and a few minor inaccuracies for the benefit of those suffering from an inability to sleep.

*(1)* Sleeping pills aren’t actually harmful to your health. Despite most people’s preconceived notions regarding them, they are – in fact – empirically proven not to have any lasting, negative, short-term or long-term impacts on your sleep (just make sure you look for “non-habit forming” on the bottle). It is analogous to a diabetic who uses insulin to address his/her imbalance (sleep is, in many ways, just as essential to your health).

    (2) The common headache associated with alcohol is actually caused by dehydration and is easily avoidable. Your brain essentially shrinks away from your skull, creating a very unpleasant pain. Drinking plenty of water before, during, and after alcohol consumption is the simplest way to prevent them if they’re keeping you awake.

    (3) Caffeine stays in the body for close to 5 hours. Although consuming it early in the day wont inhibit your ability to go to sleep, drinking caffeine regularly severely impacts the QUALITY of your sleep. If you want to have more restful sleep, lay off the caffeine. πŸ˜›

    (4) Every SINGLE night you don’t get roughly 9 hours of sleep in, you add the gap to your lifetime-accumulated sleep debt. This can reach hundreds, even thousands of hours for some people and research has proven that you are not operating at your peak until your sleep debt equals zero. The solution? Sleep more/nap whenever possible!

    (5) Lastly, there is NO SUCH THING as OVERSLEEPING. Despite what you may have heard, you feel more tired because your body is not used to getting so much sleep and is adjusting. Oversleeping is not harmful to you in any way and only serves to reduced your sleep debt.

Hope this helped. πŸ˜€ The point about sleeping pills is probably most relevant. If you’re interested in more information you can visit http://www.end-your-sleep-deprivation.com/. It’s the Stanford Sleep and Dreams website and has many specific pages dedicated to helping those who can’t sleep.

  39. Trevor

Thanks for the tip on tea but the tea I use is acttually called sleepy time and ive heard that tip before but i dont know where.

  40. Kaoru Hitachiin

about it being “quiet in the bedroom” i have a waterfall in my frog tank and a fan going all night and it actually helps me fall asleep. my friend staying with me agrees.

and as for counting sheep i read that you shouldnt because it keeps your mind busy. and, do you close your eyes while counting said sheep?

  41. David

Whenever I have trouble falling asleep, I usually try counting backwards from a thousand, I can usually tell right when I’m about to fall asleep because I’ll start mixing up the numbers and counting forward

  42. Kathy

I learned this one when I was really young since I went to my Grandpa’s every weekend and he had a huge lake.

For a long amount of time you should play in the water, maybe even float, especially towards the evening. When I was little, it would be hours after that I’d go to bed and I could still feel the waves under me! It was relaxing, My cousins and siblings all had this happen to them afterwards, so I’m not the only one, it just takes a lot of water time. πŸ™‚

  43. annaabelle

i also heard that spraying a light mist of lavendar around the room and on the sheets relaxes you, and helps you go to sleep! It really works!

  44. daniel

Well, from all of these tips, the one that seems to help me personally is no. 13, the one about having a warm bath! It is just awesome and it makes me sleep like a new born child! You all should try it out as often as possible!

  45. John

The question is what should we do to make absolutely sure that no one disturbs our sleep. I think that you can never be 100% sure of this, because even if I try to make sure, there can always be something that may happen and I won’t be able to sleep. This keeps happening to me all the time, so I found a good way to deal with this sort of problem.

I just put on a pair of ear plugs so that I do not hear a thing anymore. Even if something is trying to disturb me, I won’t be disturbed. This has helped me to stay asleep during the night and because I don’t wake up in the middle of the night anymore, now I wake up feeling relaxed and great!

Just wanted to say that I really like this article and found that I personally must take that warm bath that you talked about, with about 3 hours before sleep. This seems to be the best time for me, and it may be the case of other people as well.

Maybe you can’t all take a bath right before bed, and maybe we need to do that with 3 or 4 hours prior to that. The main idea is that this thing works great for me, and maybe it will work for others as well. My advice is that anyone should be taking a warm bath near bedtime! It is really great!

Judy, thank you very much for that tip! I have included it into this article.

The part about the “make sure it is quiet in the bedroom” really helps me a lot when I am trying to fall asleep. I just can not sleep if something or someone is making noises around me πŸ™ I tried to do this, but I just can’t, so every time i try to get some shut eye I just make sure that I won’t be disturbed by anyone or anything.

Great article that made me sleepy after I read it πŸ™‚ and here is another tip that I think is useful: finding you favorite position and sleeping on it. Also make sure that you are relaxing your jaw as I’ve heard that this is quite important in getting a good night rest. Thanks!
