This is great, but don’t forget that your room should also be at the right temperature because if it is too hot or cold, this will cause discomfort and restlessness.

    2. Khloee

Write, doodle, watch T.V., garden, get on the internet, clean, write letters, talk to friends, ride your bike, play a game, learn to play an instrument, volunteer at a soup kitchen, go to a park, play with a pet. Just do something. 😀

I have the same problem. I sleep when ever I am bored. Next time you think of anything to do walk around, or do a activity you enjoy. Call up some friends and hang out.

    6. tamara

I used to take long naps too throughout the day. I’ve established new hobbies like drawing, crocheting, and baking. You can go to the park and meet new people or even just walk around and people watch (works at malls, etc too). Go for a bike ride in the afternoon, fresh air helps to keep you awake! Hope this helps(:

    7. Susan

Try making some worthwhile goals for your school vacation and work on them.

    10. sleepless in Seattle

You need to keep yourself busy in the day find a hobby or make friends stop taking naps.

    11. Adnan Hussain

Hey there Ettie, I got some advice for you. Instead of having a nap just randomly do something odd like jumping jacks and make sure its just spontaneous, or just go outside and start a hobby like fixing things and building simple yet difficult things. I found that trying to build those constructable aeroplanes is very challenging and keeps you busy for a very long time. Hope I helped you out if not just say and i’ll try and give you another piece of advice. Thanks for reading.

    12. tamra

Try to go out around places like the gym, park, and maybe to a date at night. You don’t want to go to any of these places alone. Also you can check out more stuff to do in your local community:)

    13. Galaxy

Oh my gosh you wrote that a day after my birthday! Cool.

What you need to do is GO OUTSIDE GET SOME EXERCISE instead of being lazy and laying and sleeping around all day. Do something, invite a friend over, or whatever you like to do. Then go to bed at NIGHT and be happy

  3. Kayla

I hope this helps! I have tried everything, but nothing has worked. Maybe this will finally be the solution!

    1. sleepawake

I hope it helps you, Kayla.

  4. bob

The best way to sleep is to close your eyes and think of running water out of a tap it always works.

    1. sleepawake

I would never work for me, Bob, but if you get results with it, maybe others will as well.

      1. Michael

I have to either have a dead silent room, or my favorite music playing(rap[:)
some songs and some apps don’t work.

      2. sillytacos

        i would pee on myself….

      3. sleeep well. ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZz

same. not for me.Can’t go to sleep in running water in my head

    2. juila

Wow thanks bob i tried almost everything on the list but this is the only one that worked! Thanks!

    3. Galaxy

This will work for everyone if they keep their eyes shut long enough. But some people are not very good at falling asleep that way, so you may want to try something different if you are that person. By the way my real name is really Galaxy in case you thought it was a fake name. 🙂 hope I helped you!

  5. Lise

I absolutely CANNOT sleep if it is too quiet. I just can’t. It will take me hours and hours, so I NEED to have white noise. I just have small fan and I put it on the lowest setting. It also helps keep me cool in the summer 🙂 I also agree that meditating and stretching work very well. If you can’t sleep it might be because of the temperature, like when it is too hot I have trouble falling asleep.

    1. Khloee

I can never go to sleep without the the T.V. on and on a low volume. As a child my parents always had the television on in their room, and I could listen to it. I recently read an article about a sleep study that discovered that those who count sheep usually stay awake up to ten minutes longer. I want to be an author, and I know if I have a night where I can’t get to sleep I either get my notebook out and write, or start fabricating a story in my head.

    2. Eliza

Strange. I can’t sleep if there is noise, especially if it is regular.

    3. sarah

you should leave the tv on

    4. Galaxy

Some noise is soothing for sleep, but when the people say sleeping with a pet helps, they don’t mean a hamster in its cage! That thing is LOUD once it gets in its wheel. If you want to stay up all night you do that, but if not then don’t keep the hamster in your room when you are asleep. I learned that the hard way at least 3 times. Wow I got off topic

  6. jake

i hope this works i sleep like 5 hours a week. The bags under my eyes are black. Just too much stress.

    1. sarah

      take ten deep beathes

  7. crystal

I find listening to an analog clock tick, helps a lot!

    1. Lilly

      So do I
That is like soooooooooo cool! We both think the same way! Awesome! Ha Ha

  11. Hayhay

I need some sound to sleep. This article sort of helped, but i always need soft music, a fan, my fishtank filter, furnace sound or something to sleep. I dont know why, but i cannot sleep in complete silence.

    1. puddin'man828

yes me too, in complete silence, im just wide awake, i turn the fan on in my room, “BOOM”! out like a light.

  12. Bethany

I can’t go to sleep but that is because something dramatic happed today and I can’t get it off my mind. Trying to, but can’t, I will try some of these tricks.

    1. riley

just talk to some one about your day and it should go off your mind

    2. Danni

This may sound kinda silly but I find if I have stressful things on my mind I find that actually pretending it’s an object on me to take it off my body and throw it out into the open for me to deal with in the morning and then focus on something positive.

    3. help24

Try thinking of some thing else to get rid of what ever happened. Like something good that happened when you were young or just read your fav. book.

  13. Daria

Thx so much 🙂 This helps a lot!

    1. Lala9

      Yeah it does help

  14. Cait

My main problem is that i think about all my problems before bed. I find it best to clear my mind and think of the day in head of me, and I also have a trick my mother taught me. Start relaxing every muscle in your body (from the feet up) and pretend that they are sinking into the bed and getting very heavy the farther you move up. usually by the time i reach my mid section, Im asleep 🙂

    1. cat

well, i have read this comment and im confused….how do u relax ur muscles??? and how long does it take

    2. Haley

I tried that little trick and it almost put me to sleep on the spot!

  15. Brianna

Now I understand why I have so much trouble. All night I have my laptop right next to me and I’m on it all the time!! Aha thanks!!

  16. Yuuki Hikaru

    This was very helpful!

  17. Rae

Well, I’ve read over this, and I do agree with most. Though another tip is as simple as day. Simply go into a ‘meditation’ type mode. Something like laying in a comfortable position, and relax your body one part at a time, from head to toe, and focusing on if you’re actually relaxing or not. Personally I’ve gotten to the point on which I fall asleep before I even get finished relaxing. If you can’t do it right away, no worries, it comes with time

  18. Ashton

Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth to help you relax.

  19. Madison

There’s a lot I could say on this subject; I don’t have trouble staying asleep, it’s getting to sleep that’s the problem.
Anyway, I’m currently on an iPod Touch and I have a Sleepmaker Rain app that helps me fall asleep in under 10-15 minutes!!
There’s a lite version of this app as well. I HIGHLY suggest you download the lite version for free in the app store. There are many different types of Sleepmaker apps, including rivers, nature, ocean/waves, storms, etc. & in my rain app, for example, there are different levels of sound, from soft to loud. I picked out a track that I like the best that I play whenever I use it! Just set a timer for when you want the track to stop playing, plug in a pair of headphones, and enjoy! You don’t even have to worry about buying the full version if you don’t want to. Just wanted to give a shout-out to all of you with smartphones.(:

    1. Frank

      Thanks,that’s helpful

    2. Millie

The app sounds so cool, but my alarmclock is my iPod, so would I wake up to rain and stuff?

  20. Kate

I never fall asleep fast and this helped me so much! I have never been sleeping well! Thanks so much.

  21. Austin

Fantasize about people and situations. Not only will this relax you to a deep sleep but your fantasies may come true. Never know! 🙂

    1. April

actually i find that i do this without even meaning to and can get carried away and go on for hours without falling asleep. although it may work for plenty of other people 😛

    2. S!S!

SOOOO true! I do that a lot and I end up dreaming them sometimes. That’s why I love to sleep. 🙂

    3. Repic

I agree that we should get enough sleep every single night. It’s the time when our body recuperates (cleanse, repair, and rejuvenate on a deep cellular level) so we’ll have the focus and energy to go on with our daily routines. Rest = Restoration. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Proper sleep means more patience, less stress, better reaction time, increased learning, more efficiency and better health. Sleep tight!

    4. Calum

Well the TV helps me sleep or just talking to myself maybe people should try that because talking to yourself calms your emotions and the brain so if u talk peacefully you’ll feels sleepier 🙂 that always works for me ….

  22. shella

if you have problems getting comfortable before sleeping, a good thing to do is have enough support under your neck, not so much your entire head because that can cause a lot of strain on your neck and shoulders, and also under your back if you have a deep natural arch, like I do. it’ll be a lot easier to relax into sleep. if you like to sleep on your tummy keep that support under your neck and have a pillow under your arm that you’re facing. keeps your body more in balance and you won’t wake up sore. also, if you’re sleeping with someone who snores loudly try breathing with them and/or listening to their snores as rhythmic instead of a disturbance. you can definitely use ear plugs, but this works great.

  23. Emily

Another way to fall asleep faster is to surround yourself with pillows and blankets. That was you feel more secure and more comfortable!

  24. ChristopherSoto

and my grandma tells me to close my eyes relax and think about nothing or think about urself sleeping and it works =D

  25. ChristopherSoto

Rule #25: i always pray and it keeps me safe i feel safe cuz all the angels are watching over me and my family. =D

  26. dave

I have a program on my ipod that has hundreds of sounds. certain sounds are soothing to some people mine is the sound of a washing machine. something like this usually does the tricks. this works even better with earbud attachments.

  27. selita

Though it may not work for everybody I’ve found if you sleep in a cool almost cold bedroom you not only fall asleep faster you also move and roll over less because your not getting hotm

  28. Sleeper

It is truly handy to persuade one’s self that he will get enough rest. I have intentionally not looked into the question of how beneficial it is to lay in bed awake, and simply imagine that it is very helpful, and that the longer I happen to be up, the deeper I will fall asleep. It is pretty dubious, but soon I am asleep.

  29. nate

Don’t drink any liquid before going to bed at least 3-4 hours before going to bed, it will wake you up and make you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

  30. lily

    hope it works!!

  31. HECHAywood

This was a very useful article to read. I think the best tip that was given was counting my breaths and breathing in deeply. It helped me relax and not think about things that would keep my mind racin. I learned not to think about things that would get me excited.

  32. Zoe

I remember my dad used to lay in bed with me at night and scratch my back and I fell right to sleep. So if you can try having somebody scratch your back. It relaxes you

  33. Katie

I learned if you are having a hard time sleeping from stress (not limited to, but this is in usual cases) a technique that helps you sleep better.
Lay down in your bed on your back. Start at your toes, and contract your toe muscles as hard as you can for 15 seconds, then relax. Repeat this step one muscle at a time and move up to your whole foot, lower legs, knees, thighs, stomach, chest, shoulders, biceps/triceps, elbows, wrists, hands, fingers, neck, and jaw. Each time you do it include every body part’s muscle you have already squeezed. Move in a “line” up your body, stopping at each muscle you can think of to include your whole self. This releases something in the muscles in your body and makes them less tense, relaxing you and making you tired for bed! For me, this works on some nights, but not all. Just thought i would share!

I used to have problems sleeping. until a friend told me to buy a electric blanket. you could pick these up quite cheap. i thought it wasn’t going to work. but i can say it does help. the warmth helps and it relaxes you.
I used to get into bed at 11 and would fall asleep around 3. then be up for work at 7.
4 hours was not enough. but now with the blanket i would be asleep within 30 mins. i would recommend people to try it.
it helped me it might help you 🙂

A good tip I use for falling asleep, is that I lay on my back, and place a pillow under each lim, and slowly breathe in and out trying to relax yourself. Try thinking of summer days, maybe even winter days. Whichever works for you 🙂

Popcorn has natural chemicals that help you fall asleep. Non-buttered is the best because butter takes time to digest. Another thing that will make you instantly fall asleep is cherry juice. The natural chemicals found in cherries are really effective when trying to fall asleep.

    Good article! 🙂

I have had trouble sleeping in the past, for me it was so bad that I had to go to a therapist to learn how to make my body more relaxed, and not stress. I have practiced many of these tips and discovered that alot of them help me. (: One of the tips I learned in therapy was to read a book, usually a boring book… and I chose a cook book! Not only did it make me sleepy but when I was falling asleep I just thought of some cooking recipes that I liked and that also helped me sleep. (: Thanks for the article it really helped!

At insomniac- that’s what I do to, just not as bad. I stay up until one or so, then lay in bed until 2 ish and then fall into a bad sleep. It sucks.

Brush your teeth!!! Having a sour or bad taste in your mouth before sleeping will have a negative effect on your mind.

I have learned alot from this article but i dont think it can help me. I have this problem of staying awake even if i dont want to i just lie in bed with eyes closed i can do this for hours. After i finaly get to sleep i sleep like a rock nothing will wake me up nothing at all, it is such a deep sleep. I can only sleep in the heat 30 degrees i sleep next to the fire place downstairs the only way i can fall asleep is in the heat that i enjoy so much

The best thing to do to fall asleep is to lie down in a real comfortable position, close your eyes, and refuse to open them. Works like a charm.

  47. Sorcha

What helps me is closing my eyes and imagining what I will do the next day and what I will dress like and how I will look and basically make up a sort of fantasy tomorrow. This might also make you have dreams about it.

i agree…reading all this made me so sleepy. but the only things that really really help me fall right to sleep id having the person i love beside me, even if we are back to back, its just comforting. then there’s having a pet, i guess seeing them so relaxed and at ease just helps some how.

    1. Davey

Yeaah but reading takes time, and you won’t get to sleep any faster, number one solution sleeping pills or get someone to smack you really hard in the face!, then you’ll fall alseep then, maybe not by coice but you will be silent for the rest of the night
